Question: How does a person show gratitude for one’s blessings? And what is obligatory upon the Muslim towards these abundant blessings which cannot be enumerated or counted?
Answer: That which is obligatory is to show gratitude towards these blessings, and this gratitude guarantees their continuity and preservation. Allāh, the Majestic, the Most-High said, “And when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks, I will give you more (of My blessings); but if you are ungrateful, verily, My punishment is indeed severe.” [Ibrāhīm:7].
Being grateful is actualised through three matters/pillars, without them gratitude does not come about.
The first pillar: the inward acknowledgement of the blessings of Allāh, and that is by acknowledging to oneself and with one’s heart that these blessings are from Allāh, the Majestic, the Most-High, and that they are a favour from Allāh upon you and the Muslims.
The second pillar: the outward pronouncement of them: “As for the blessing of your Lord, then proclaim (that).” [Ad-Ḍuḥā:11]. So you make mention of the blessings of Allāh, be grateful for them, and remind your brothers of them and order them to show gratitude of them.
The third pillar: utilising them in obedience to Allāh, the All-Mighty, the Majestic, obedience to the One Who gives these blessings and is in charge of them.
