Beware Of Mocking The Religion, a Jumuʿah khuṭbah by Ustādh Rayaan Barker (hafidhahullāh)
- Islām took people from the darkness of shirk and superstition to Tawḥīd and justice, and one evil to avoid is mocking the religion
- Sūrat at-Tawbah 9:65-66: “Was it Allāh, His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuse, you have disbelieved after your belief”
- The context of the verse: men on the journey to Tabūk said they were only joking to pass the time, and the Prophet ﷺ would not turn to them
- The scholars’ ruling: mocking Allāh, the Qurʾān or the Messenger ﷺ is disbelief that takes one out of Islām, while mocking a fellow Muslim in a worldly matter is a sin
- Mocking an obligation or Sunnah that the person knows to be part of the religion also falls under the ruling, as does mocking the scholars for the knowledge they carry
- Guard the tongue when joking and do not speak about the religion in jest
- Do not be like those who accept only what suits their own beliefs and twist what contradicts them
