Preserving Health - Guidelines From The Book and The Sunnah
Summary: In this lecture, Abu Iyaad speaks about the importance of preserving health and a good strong body, explaining how it has been made desirable to do so in the Quran and sunnah. He also talks about the three foundational principles of medicince, as mentioned by Ibn Al Qayyim rahimahullah (May Allah have mercy upon him).
Notes: The first foundational principle of medicine mentioned in this talk is Al-Himyah- the preservation of health itself.
The story of Talut from the Quran is then mentioned. Allah stated “Indeed Allah has appointed Talut as a king over you”. They said, “How can he be a king over us when we are better fitted than him for the kingdom, and he has not been given enough wealth”. He said: “Verily, Allah has chosen him above you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and body (meaning an abundance of strength)”. (2:247). The speaker narrates how this example praises Talut and highlights how this ayah shows how Allah praises the virtue of strength in knowledge and strength in body.
Likewise, Ibn Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: “Indeed, there are two favours and blessings with respect to which many of the people lose out. They are health and spare time.” Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah (May Allah have mercy upon him) said this means many people do not use or they neglect their health and likewise their spare time in a way in which there is no benefit.
