We begin with the Tafsir of Surah Al-Humazah. This Surah is named Surah Al-Humazah due to Allaah mentioning Humazah in the first ayah. The relevance of this Surah to the previous is that Surah Al-Asr speaks about the whole of mankind being in loss and destruction- except those who have four specific characteristics; this Surah speaks about the one in loss. The one who is a slanderer and backbiter will be in loss. collected wealth. This Surah was revealed concerning individuals.

Woe to every slanderer and backbiter.[] (1)

وَيۡلٌ۬ is a word of threat

Who has gathered wealth and counted it, (2)

is to keep counting continuouslyعَدَّدَهُ

He thinks that his wealth will make him last forever! (3)

Nay! Verily, he will be thrown into the crushing Fire (4)

The fire has been named

because it crushes that which comes into it.

And what will make you know what the crushing Fire is? (5)

This is to bring across and make a person aware of the greatness of something (in this case is the crushing fire).

The fire of Allâh, kindled, (6)

The fire of Allaah is the fire of justice. Allaah does not oppress; rather He only punishes those who are deserving of it.

Which leaps up over the hearts, (7)

The heart is where the belief is, and the crooked actions likewise originate back to the heart.

Verily, it shall be closed upon them, (8)

Closed meaning they will go to the doors but the doors will be closed upon them.

In pillars stretched forth (i.e. they will be punished in the Fire with pillars). (9)

The pillars will be tall pillars in every direction.

This Surah reminds the believer of: the resurrection, the reward that will take place, a warning from backbiting and slander, the fact that the hell-fire is a severe punishment, the terrible nature of the fire, and the disgrace of the person who has the characteristics worthy of being thrown into the fire.
