We arrive at the chapter concerning the ruling of menstruation and post-natal bleeding. Allaah says: “They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an Adha, therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they are purified. And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allâh has ordained for you. (2: 222)
Menstruation is natural blood and is from the creation of the woman. Allaah created this with a wisdom; it is a means of nutrition for the baby, due to the baby requiring nutrition. Allaah turns this blood into breast-milk. If the woman is not pregnant, nor is she breast-feeding, then the blood has nowhere to go, so it leaves and comes in the form of menstruation.
According to many scholars, the minimum age a female can menstruate is 9 years old, any blood leaving the body prior to this is not menstruation, and many scholars mention that a woman menstruates up to 50 years old, after this point, even if a woman menstruates, that is not menstruation, and the rulings regarding menstruation no longer apply to her.
Other scholars say there is no lower and upper limit to menstruation, so long as a woman sees blood, then it is menstruation, whether she is young or whether she is old. The proof is the verse mentioned earlier (2:222) ““They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an Adha, therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they are purified.”
The correct position of the minimum time a woman can menstruate is that there is no minimum according to Shaykh Uthaymeen, and there is no maximum amount of time a woman can menstruate for.
