Today we cover the chapter concerning the rulings of Tayammum (wiping over the face and hands with clean earth in a specific way).

Tayyamum in the Arabic language is “to intend”. This is shown in the Quran.

Allaah says in Surah Al-Baqarah: ‘Do not intend to give from the worst of your wealth (i.e. with that which you yourself would not accept yourself).’

For the previous nations, they had to remain in a state of ritual impurity up until they found water, which led to difficulties. This is a provision that has been given to this nation that no other nation were given before the nation of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam.

However, one must make the effort to try and go out and find water if possible. Shaykh Uthaymeen says the distance a person should travel up to is the distance of what is common for the people.

Shaykh Uthaymeen said if water becomes available whilst someone is praying, having made tayammum, there is a difference of opinion from the people of knowledge on whether this person’s prayer becomes nullified or not.

One position is that prayer doesn’t become nullified because the individual has already started the prayer in a manner that he was granted permission to do so- acting upon the legislation related to tayammum.

Another position is that prayer becomes nullified because of the general statement of Allaah: “and do not find water” however, now water is available.

Shaykh Uthaymeen says the stronger position seems to be the second position, of the prayer becoming invalid once water is available.

If water is made available after the prayer is concluded in a state of tayammum, the individual does not need to repeat their prayer.
