In the previous lesson, the chapter titled ‘what a muslim should stay away from’ was covered. The seven deadly sins were mentioned, as well as disobedience to the parents, making false testimony and backbiting. The definition of major sins and minor sins were covered, and how a major sin can be recognised.
In this lesson, Ustaadh Abu Humayd covers the topics of sihr (magic) & its types, killing and taking the wealth of orphans.
Sihr (magic) is disbelief in Allaah. Shaykh Ibn Baaz (May Allaah have mercy upon him) said a magician cannot be a magician except that he falls into disobeying Allaah and into obeying the devils. Allaah says in the Quran:
“And when there came to them a Messenger from Allah (i.e. Muhammad Peace be upon him) confirming what was with them, a party of those who were given the Scripture threw away the Book of Allah behind their backs as if they did not know!” (Al-Baqarah: 101)
Allaah then says in the next ayah:
“They followed what the Shayatin (devils) gave out (falsely of the magic) in the lifetime of Sulaiman (Solomon). Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shayatin (devils) disbelieved”
Sihr is of two types:
- Sihr that physically affects a person and the effects are real, such as causing sickness to a person
- Sihr which is illusionary, such as the example in the Quran mentioned between Musa and the magicians of Pharoah, where the magic of the magicians was made to appear as though there were snakes and that they were moving
Allaah says in Surah Al-Falaq:
“And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow their knots” (Al-Falaq: 4)
This surah shows that an individual must ask Allaah for aid and seek protection, and that this practice (witchcraft by way of knots) is pure evil.
Abu Humayd also discusses the topic of murder. There are clear proofs that the life of a person is sacred. Allaah says:
“And those who invoke not any other ilah (god) along with Allaah, nor kill such life as Allaah has forbidden, except for just cause” (Al-Furqan: 68)
Allaah also says:
“And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein, and the wrath and the curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him”. (An-Nisa: 93)
However, if an individual kills someone unintentionally, it is upon them to free a believing slave, and they must give blood money to the relative of the deceased, unless the relatives remit it and pardon the killer.
Abu Humayd then covers the major sin of taking the wealth of the orphan. Allaah says:
Consuming the wealth of the orphan. Allaah says:
“Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, they eat up only a fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the blazing Fire!” (An-Nisa:10)
The orphan has weakness within themselves due to their situation, and the guardian of the orphan is entrusted. When they consume that wealth of the orphan, none knows about it except Allaah. This is the reason why there is a severe reprimanding of it and it is from the major sins.
